From the author who taught us that junk in not a four-letter word,
and drawing on her years of experience as a passionate thrifter and
collector, Carter highlights her favourite junking moments, revels
in the thrill of the hunt and imparts many personal tips for
finding treasures in flea markets, yard sales, estate sales, shops,
on the web, or wherever you may find yourself. With her passion for
self-expression and her personal approach to decor, Carter speaks
to our desire to surround ourselves with belongings that bring
beauty and meaning to our lives. Along the way, Carter interviews
other designers and high-profile collectors such as Ralph Lauren,
Bunny Williams, and Mike Wolfe from American Pickers revealing
their favourite treasure hunts and showing us how they live with
their collections. Inspiring and liberating, The Joy of Junk shows
how we can integrate our passions and histories to live creatively
and happily with the special and quirky objects that give our homes
soul.
Written by a Speech-Language Pathologist, the books incorporate
research-based activities to stimulate word-finding. Regardless of
the level of difficulty, the games provide essential calisthenics
to keep the mind active. Unlike most Alzheimer's books aimed at
caregivers, these are designed to be completed independently by
individuals in mild to moderate stages, giving them an opportunity
for enjoyable leisure-time activity and a sense of pride and
accomplishment. When shared with caregivers, family or friends,
meaningful interaction is automatic. Individual game items provide
a springboard to reminisce about fond memories and create positive
feelings. The series offers activity directors or recreation
therapists a wealth of ready-made content to incorporate into group
activities. The level of difficulty, based on vocabulary, varies
from the simplest in Volume I to the most advanced in Volume III.
Answers are provided at the back of the first two issues and
following each game in the last issue. Each book, containing 70 to
80 games, is sold at a more affordable price than similar products.
The up-to-date, recent releases receive positive user reviews on

Mary Randolph (1762- 1828) wrote The Virginia House-Wife (1824),
one of the most influential housekeeping and cookbooks of the
nineteenth century. Randolph tried to improve women's lives by
limiting the time they had to spend in their kitchens. She gave her
readers many inexpensive ingredients that could be used to make
impressive meals. She popularized over 40 vegetables and introduced
several foreign meals. She was the first recorded person to be
buried at what became Arlington National Cemetery.
Originally published in 1838, Randolph's work is more than just a
regional cookbook. While gathering the best of Southern cooking, it
also gives a picture of dishes that were popular around the country
at the time. Reflecting the influence of cuisines from other
cultures, The Virginia Housewife preserves the multiethnic flavors
of American cuisine of the 1830s. The recipes will be a delight to
modern cooks-especially the 22 flavors of ice cream
